I don't know the specific process on an 1816, but on other Case skid loaders of the era, the process involved supporting the skid steer on jackstands, removing the tires, removing an inspection plate/s and checking the chain tension and inspecting the sprockets (for sharp and worn edges). Then adjust the tension as needed according to the manual.
