The older ones don't have cabs to quiet things down as much and if you have manual controls you will hear even more noise. It does not whine when the handles are in the neutral position. But regardless of the RPM setting, once the levers are engaged at any speed forward or reverse, I get a really noticeable whine from the hydraulics.

The whine sounds like that high pitch sound when a hydraulic function is either "left on"..or trying to "engage"..that's the only way I can describe it. Check inside the hydraulic filter for signs of metal/debris indicating a pump failure. Be sure that the oil level is full. Check the oil temp after an hour of use, hydraulic oil (aw46 or equivelant) is ok to 200 -250 degrees but over that number would not be the best case for your pump. Engine oil does not do well over 200 degrees long term.
